It's one of the most common questions we hear at the shop: "Should I get a leveling kit or a lift kit?" The answer depends on what you actually want from the truck — and what you're willing to spend.
Here's the honest breakdown, without the sales pitch.
What a Leveling Kit Does
Most half-ton trucks sit 1"–2" lower in the front than the rear from the factory. This is intentional — it improves aerodynamics and accommodates the sag from payload in the bed. But it gives the truck a nose-down stance that many owners don't love.
A leveling kit raises the front of the truck 1.5"–3" to match the rear height. That's it. No lift in the rear, no major suspension overhaul. On most trucks, it's a coil spacer or strut extension that installs in 2–3 hours.
What you get:
- Level stance — no more nose-down look
- Clearance for one tire size up (typically allows 33" tires on F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500)
- No significant change to ride quality or handling
- Alignment required after install
Leveling kits start at $225 installed at Capital Upfitters — alignment included. Most common on F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra, and Tacoma. Same-week scheduling available.

A lift kit raises the entire vehicle — front and rear — for true additional ground clearance. This involves replacing or supplementing front and rear suspension components: coilovers, control arms, rear blocks or add-a-leaf kits, and potentially extended brake lines and brake hose brackets.
Lift levels and what they unlock:
- 2"–3" lift — allows 33"–34" tires, minimal suspension modification, from $550 installed
- 4"–5" lift — allows 35" tires, requires upper control arm replacement on most trucks, from $900
- 6"+ lift — allows 37"+ tires, full suspension overhaul, from $1,400+
Every lift kit requires a fresh alignment after install. At 4"+ lifts, a differential drop or carrier bearing drop is often needed to correct CV axle angles.
Maryland Inspection Note
Maryland does not have a maximum lift height law like some states, but lifted vehicles must still pass the annual safety inspection. At 4"+, inspectors will check for proper clearance around all suspension and steering components, secure bump stops, and correct lighting height. We flag any potential inspection concerns before you leave the shop.
Which One Is Right for You?
Here's our honest recommendation by use case:
- Just want a level stance + slightly bigger tires? → Leveling kit. Done in a morning, drives great, lasts the life of the truck.
- Overlanding, off-road, or need 35"+ tires? → 4"+ lift kit. Budget $1,000–$1,500 for a quality build.
- Daily driver but want the lifted look? → 3" lift + 33" tires is the sweet spot — aggressive look, still drives like a truck.
- 3/4-ton or 1-ton diesel? → Leveling is common and straightforward. Full lifts on HD trucks are more involved — call us to discuss options.
What's Included in Our Suspension Installs
Every suspension install at Capital Upfitters includes the parts, installation labor, and an alignment. We use ReadyLIFT, Rough Country, and BDS Suspension depending on vehicle and use case. We test drive every lifted vehicle before handing back the keys.
